There are so many things about the holidays that I love but holiday sweaters is not one of them. No matter how expertly one can assemble a look around a holiday sweater I've yet to see one that works. Very Donny and Marie or something knitted by grandma and should be worn only when visiting her in the very small hometown she lives in, if you really feel the need to wear one, so as to not hurt her feelings. A holiday sweater is the perfect re-gifting item and only to those people you are not very fond of. Just saying!

I was approached recently with the question, should a dress shirt be worn tucked or un-tucked? The short answer is tucked, especially when wearing a tie. Though acceptable in today's trends to wear a dress shirt un-tucked even when wearing a blazer, the dress shirt's true function is to allow for a more put together appearance and an un-tuck shirt will always lend itself to a more casual look. Besides there are plenty of casual shirts to be worn un-tucked any time one desires.

Stay away from the stores on Black Friday. The last thing you want to do is shop under pressure and competing with thousands of people for a pair of jeans on sale. The very worst way to shop is impulsively and without direction and that is exactly what Black Friday is all about. So for today, go to the gym or go for a hike, do something to burn off all those calories from yesterday so you can look great in the jeans you already own!

Happy Thanksgiving and thank you to all my loyal readers. You are the reason I do this and I love being a small part of your daily lives. So for today, keep it lose, not the day for form-fitting anything. Lose cable knit sweaters and maybe a lose cargo pant cause today we eat and eat and eat. Leave the guilt at home and celebrate guilt-free. Happy turkey everyone!

Recently a client asked if we made bespoke suits - custom made suit where all details are uniquely designed for client - and I answered, no we make made to measure suits - custom made suits where client chooses from specific styles and selection of fabrics and suit is made to the individual's measurements. In either case the end result is quite different than buying off the rack. I recommend at least one MTM suit in your lifetime and chances are you'll never go back to the rack! Rack is Wack!

The extreme cut away collar is not for every one or every tie. Best suited for heavy knit or cashmere ties, also recommendable when tying a thicker knot. This extreme cut away collar works best on the taller, leaner gentleman since this type of shirt collar tends to break the neck line. Notice the impeccable four in hand knot on the cashmere tie creating a beautiful balance between the collar and the drop of the lapel on the jacket for a perfect frame.

Sleeve length of a sport coat may vary from a suit jacket. Traditionally four inches from the tip of the thumb is the proper way to measure the length of the suit jacket sleeve, however a sport coat can be worn a bit shorter. It also depends on the individual's predilection as to how much shirt cuff he likes to show. When wearing a cuff link shirt it is not uncommon to go a bit shorter so as to feature the cuff link detail.

Has the comb become obsolete? I remember growing up, my Dad always carried a small comb in his pocket, eventually I took on the same tradition until I rebelled against all things parental and grew my hair long. Now it seems as though no one carries a comb in their pocket anymore. A comb in the pocket is a sign that your appearance is of great importance to you and you must always keep your hair in place. This is true only when wearing hair short enough to comb with a comb, but none the less the philosophy behind the comb-in-the-pocket is worth adopting with or without short hair.

Bow-ties and pocket square are as traditional as it gets when it comes to a true sartorial look. However what is trending now is the oversize bow-tie and exaggerated pocket square. We first saw it in the 70's for a minute along with thick mustaches and blown dried hair. Best suited for the younger gentlemen - 20's to 30's - I'm not banking on the longevity of this trend for any demographic. So if you so feel the need to go big, do it now cause it may not be a hot trend for long.

How you dress can add years to your look. Not disputing the fact that Jon Hamm and Vincent Kartheiser are two very good looking and relatively young guys, however dress them in high-waist lose slacks and classic cut shirts with way too much excess fabric and suddenly they lose a lot of their true appeal and look older than their age. Mind you this is still from a break while shooting the upcoming season of Mad Men and they are in period costume, but I just thought it was worth illustrating the point that how we dress creates the image we put out there for all to see. How will you dress today?

Muted color combination for vibrant results. Fall lends itself mostly to darker tones and more somber looks, but it doesn't have to be that way. Though I'm not a big fan of crazy bright colors during the colder months, I do like contrast and mixing the right colors. Shirt and tie is an easy way to accomplish that while maintaining a fairly conservative elegant look. Easy to go from day-time office to night-time dinner.

So what happens on a cold day but not super cold, you need to dress warm but not really in the mood to layer, however wearing a simple sport coat is not going to be enough. Aha! The quilted jacket comes to the rescue. The quilted jacket has been re-designed and is now less like a bummer jacket and more like a quilted sport coat. Etro, Corneliani and ISAIA are some of my favorites this season but there are many more and you really can't go wrong with any of them. Here's another must have addition to your wardrobe.

During the winter months we tend to buy ties with a higher thread count making the fabric a bit richer and thicker. For this reason when working with thick wool or cashmere ties, it is best to do the four in hand tie knot. A half Windsor or Windsor knot would make the tie knot way too bulky. You will still get a substantial knot with the four in hand.
Unlike a regular piece of luggage, the weekender does not have wheels and should feel comfortable thrown over your shoulder. Just big enough to fit all your musts and necessities for a one to three day trip. The weekender bag is usually made of leather or durable canvas and it is just the perfect piece for that spontaneous weekend getaway. In my opinion, we can all use a little spontaneity in our lives.

Ever heard of no white after Labor Day? Yes we all have. I'll clear it up for you. No white linen, silk or light cotton fabric garments after Labor Day, which is completely redundant since those are summer fabrics anyway and should not be worn in any color during the colder months. However white denim, thick wools and cashmere fabrics in white are absolutely acceptable during the fall/winter season.

Chances are the last option for most men would be to throw in a tie with their flannel shirt. Well, it so happens that it is the perfect casual fall/winter look. Choose a wool or cashmere tie so as to stay in the same depth and weight of fabric. You can opt to keep casual, by wearing jeans or chinos and if you were me a pea coat and a comfortable chukka boot would finish the look just beautifully.

At first glance this could be a sexy look. Kinda, slouchy, distressed, rebellish feel to it in a good medium wash denim. But at second glance; not so much. The holes in the pocket could be stitched and that would still create a less obvious distressed look. I don't really need to see you wallet, especially if your walking around in the hood. You may lose it! Also perhaps it's time to get a jean that has a better fit around the seat area, cause who wants to walk around looking butt-less? Not me!

The cashmere travel wrap is not just for women anymore. Travel wraps are most convenient for air travel - obviously - but also very handy during that late night dinner party when you're sitting outdoors and the heat lamp is just a bit too far for your comfort. You don't need to put on a coat you just wrap yourself in cashmere. Also great for sitting around the fire or just lounging on your couch. Must-have for winter!

I happen to be a huge fan of the rain boot. You can find them in high, medium and low heights. They are usually made out of rubber and most are reasonably priced. The best thing about a rain boot is you don't need to worry about matching it with the rest of your outfit. The brighter and louder the color, the better. Especially great when jumping in puddles and how often do we get to do that!
