If you happen to be a preppy dresser, the loafer - tassel or not - never went out of style, however for all other types the loafer is trending hard this year. I happen to adore the Dino Certo ones we carry at Sy Devore but there are many other designers in various price points that are jumping on the tassel loafer bandwagon, so there is no excuse for not getting a pair. Thursday saw the end of Lazaro Arbos on American Idol and the highly anticipated end to the fashion catastrophe that week after week Cuban Lazaro subjected us to. Not once did he get it right. I can go on about his choice of 80's-color-explosion garments that would work well on a thinner more athletic-built guy, but I won't. I will just comment on the fit of his clothes. Sweet Lazaro happens to be a little bottom heavy and week after week he emphasized his butt and thighs by wearing too tight pants - either white, bright color or pattern - and cropped jacket or tucked in shirts with suspenders which only made him look worst. I know America looooved Lazaro and I can only hope they were not feeling that love based on his look, cause that would make our nation's fashion sense quite alarming. I chose the most flattering photo of Lazaro I could find since I knew I had some less than flattering words for my fellow Cuban. Sorry Lazaro, is a NO! However when you strike the right balance is fierce. Normally a beard is best suited for guys with hair, maybe even a little on the longer side. But here is a great example of the perfect balance between shaved head and full beard. The broad jaw line and oval head shape helps tremendously in this case. I live in LA and I see a lot of shaved heads and beards going around and is not always a hit, but every once in a while I see one that works. Remember always consult your mirror and be willing to see the truth. If you look good and you feel good, do it! Besides blue matches with almost every color of the rainbow and looks good on most everyone. So be happy for the summer blues! What used to be considered something your father would wear, is now the preferred look of the hip twenty-something crowd.
So; is Mad Men responsible for this trend?
No doubt that since its premiere in 2007, the TV show Mad Men - which takes place in the advertising world of NY city in the 1960's - has featured the trim suit as not just a wearable piece of clothing for a younger generation of men, but as the look de riguer. Suddenly the suit was trim and sexy and gave young men and air of power and sophistication without feeling stuffy or boring. It took the suit out of the closet - pun intended - and on to the backs of the twenty-something crowd.
Coincidentally - or not - right around the time Mad Men was gaining in popularity, fashion ads for men started featuring trim suits. Now trim suits were not just available by the major designers in the more affluent department stores like Saks Fifth Ave or Barneys, stores like Zara and H&M were expanding their suit inventory to accommodate the needs of their not-so-rich and younger clientele. Eventually even Banana Republic teamed up with Katherine Jane Bryant - costume designer for Mad Men - for a line of Mad Men inspired clothing.
No longer just something you would wear on a special occasion or as attire requirement for certain jobs, suddenly the suit became hip and young guys from all walks of life wanted to dress in suits.
Was Mad Men the precursor for the trim suit trend?
Maybe, not really sure. Hollywood and the fashion world have always traveled theses paths hand in hand and the lines of who or what came first have often been blurred. One always feeds the other. In any case I am glad that the suit is once again hip and young men want to be seen wearing them. It makes for a much nicer visual. Don't you agree?

VincentsPOVhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01595809050884691102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7560756114623640682.post-79764856266765388102013-04-02T06:00:00.000-07:002013-04-02T06:00:04.662-07:00Retro Gruff

I keep thinking of that song:
I've been working on the railroad...........
You know which song I mean? Every time I start to write about this new denim and flannel with beards, very casual and a little gruff trend, I hear that song in my head. I happen to love the trend and sport it myself. There's something retro-masculine and sexy about this rough and tough railroad-workers-of-yesteryear's look that I really enjoy. It is a welcome option to the very crisp and tidy, well-put-together Mad Men suit and tie retro look that is also trending hard these days - more on that subject later on this week.
Today I give you this new leather suspender with a one band claw-hook on the back making it just clever enough to be different without being obnoxious or overly designed. When a bow-tie is perfectly balanced and tied evenly it is normally a pre-tied, machine assembled bow-tie. When tying a bow-tie from just a strip of stitched fabric, the result will always be slightly imperfect. And it is then that you know it is a self tied bow-tie. Have patience when tying it - it will take various tries; see Bow-Tie 101 - but never strive for perfection. The well dressed gentleman will always get it imperfectly right and wear it proudly since there is a sort of cache to the self tied bow-tie. You are never too young to be stylish and chic as evident by this very well put together youngster. Blue seersucker suit with pink shirt, green bow-tie and white sock-less bucks, tie it all up with a little flower boutonniere and you just hit a fashion home run. My parents always dressed me up as a child - especially on Easter Sunday - so this photo was sort of a trip down memory lane. Happy Easter! I have found the solution. Treat your denim jacket like a sport coat down to the pocket square. Dress shirt, tie, vest and even a pair of dress slacks to complete the look. This will create that perfect marriage between casual and dressy that can be so fresh when done well. As always, make sure the fit is on point and that there is no excess fabric on any of the pieces. They should all be hugging your body. If you have your Penguin polo-shirts stacked away, bring them out. If you never had one, this is the year to get at least one. I'm featuring red this week in honor of Marriage Equality. So get a red Penguin polo-shirt, support a very deserving cause and look great doing it. At what point does it become costume?
Well here is a perfect example. Take this gentleman - and by the way he's dressed the gentleman label fits - he looks like a day player out of Central Casting for a 1920's film. Take away the walking stick, that thing over the shoes - can anyone tell me what that is called please? - the chain time piece, release the hem about two inches and he's just a well dressed man. I just don't see the need for the embellishments that make it period costume rather than current fashion. Do you?
